Ego Dystonia

Ego Dystonia is a state of existential stress that arises
when we are aware that we are making life choices that are
not consistent with our highest and best self-image.

When we consciously violate our own system of values or ethics.

Ego-Dystonic stress is a symptom of the violation of our Conscience.

Of course, our Conscience may or may not be well informed.

In the case of some individuals, either through genetics, training
or habituation, the Conscience may be seriously weakened, malformed,
or even non-existent.

In the case of others, the Conscience may be hyper-sensitive, having
been unrealistically conditioned to see the world in black and white,
due to enculturation or the influence of primarily Western religion.

The experience of Ego Dystonic stress may often be displaced, may be
experienced in terms of  a frenetic effort at self justification or self “medication”,
addiction to substances, a frenetic desire to acquire things,

a compulsion to judge or find fault with others thus assuring ourselves
or our own superiority.

Ego Dystonia results in generalized Existential Angst.

Dealing with issues of Ego Dystonia is a crucial step on the path of our
own Spiritual Development and Self Actualization.

In order to begin this process, we need to step back, and gently examine
and evaluate the content our own Super-Ego, or Conscience. We need to
take Ownership of it.

What are the messages we are telling our self about living a proper life?

Where did they come from? When did they form?

Are they to an extent the strictures of our childhood?

Do we really put credence in them or are they learned second hand,
unevaluated?

This is a process that takes time and will need to be revisited regularly.
Every time we are aware of Ego Dystonic stress, or patterns of behavior

or anxiety that is generalized, or which we do not understand.

The answer to the problem of Ego Dystonia is engagement instead of displacement,

self evaluation and reflection.

When must take ownership of our Conscience, and we must then cultivate this
faculty, and accept its intuitive guidance.

This one speaks to my heart, as I know deep down I am engaging in some activities that don’t line up with what I hold to be true and valuable. I can at least hold on to the fact that like so many others, I am not living an illusion of convincing myself that I am not doing wrong. I am one of those rare people who can recognize the truth about myself, and admit I need to change some things. I can also see the future for what it is, and it has NOTHING to do with my present circumstances….they will be a distant memory.
